Your Image Gets Smaller — Without Ever Leaving Your Browser

Most online compressors quietly send your photo to a remote server, squeeze it there, and send it back. We skipped that step completely. WebP Shrink does every bit of the work inside your own browser's memory.

Here's what happens behind the scenes: your image is decoded onto a hidden canvas. The tool then tries WebP compression starting at 90% quality, stepping down a little at a time and stopping the moment the file dips under 99KB. If the picture is really heavy — think busy textures or detailed scans — quality alone won't be enough. In that case the tool gently scales the width and height down (about 15% per pass) until the target is safely hit.

What Happens, Step by Step

[STEP 01 — 03]
01.

Your File Stays With You

The browser loads your image straight into local memory. No network calls are made — you could even switch off the internet and the tool would still work.

Smart Compression Passes

The engine compresses in small quality steps and stops as soon as the file measures 99KB or less. Your photo only gets squeezed as much as it actually needs to be.

You get a verified WebP file that's ready for exam portals, job forms, and fast-loading websites. One click, and it's on your device.

// THE FORMAT QUESTION

Why the Output Is WebP (and When That Might Not Suit You)

Format Compression Standard Relative Size at Same Quality Portal Acceptance
WebP (Recommended) Predictive VP8 Intra-frame 25% – 34% smaller than JPEG Modern Portals (Chrome, Safari 14+)
JPEG / JPG Discrete Cosine Transform (DCT) Baseline reference Universal Legacy Acceptance
PNG DEFLATE / LZ77 Lossless 200% – 500% larger for photos Universal for Graphics & Icons

One heads-up: a few older government and exam portals only accept files ending in .jpg or .jpeg. If your form is one of them, check its requirements first — or run the result through our JPG converter to match the format.

Worth Knowing

  • • Dense scans and heavily detailed images sometimes need their dimensions scaled down to squeeze under 99KB. That's normal — and it still looks sharp.
  • • Very old browsers (anything from before 2020) may not support WebP. Updating the browser usually sorts this out.

Questions People Actually Ask

[KNOWLEDGE BASE]

Why did my photo also come out smaller in width and height?

Lowering quality only goes so far. Past roughly 50%, photos start turning blocky and blurry — faces lose detail and text becomes hard to read. So when quality alone can't reach 99KB, the tool shrinks the dimensions a little instead. A slightly smaller but crisp photo always beats a large, pixelated one.

My file was 98KB, but the form still rejected it. What gives?

Different forms count size differently. Some use KiB (102,400 bytes), others use KB (100,000 bytes), and a handful even count the upload wrapper around your file. If a portal keeps saying no, aim lower — a file between 80 and 90KB passes almost everywhere.

Is it safe to compress passport photos or ID documents here?

Honestly, this is the single best reason to use this tool. Nothing is uploaded, stored, or seen by anyone — not even us. Your documents stay on your own device from start to finish.

Will a WebP file open on my phone and in my browser?

Yes. WebP opens in Chrome, Safari, Firefox and Edge — on desktop and mobile alike, with support in over 97% of browsers worldwide. The only exception is some very old institutional portals that whitelist only .jpg files, so it's worth a quick check of the form's rules before you submit.
